Car and Trailer Training in Northern Ireland – Are You Ready to Tow Safely and Confidently?
Oct 14, 2026
Whether you’re towing a caravan for a family holiday, transporting machinery for work or pulling a trailer carrying vehicles or equipment, knowing how to tow safely is an essential driving skill.
At Sandy Arthur Training Services, we provide professional car and trailer training from our Limavady training centre, helping drivers across Northern Ireland develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to tow safely on our roads.
With more drivers using trailers for both business and leisure, understanding your responsibilities behind the wheel has never been more important.

Do You Need a Car and Trailer (B+E) Licence?
One of the most common questions we receive is whether drivers need to complete an additional driving test before towing a trailer.
The answer depends on when you passed your car driving test, the entitlement shown on your licence and the vehicle and trailer combination you intend to use.
In Northern Ireland, drivers who passed their Category B car test before 1 January 1997 generally have broader towing entitlements, including B+E, although the precise limits depend on their licence.
Drivers who passed their car test from 1 January 1997 onwards should check their current licence entitlement and the rules applicable to their vehicle and trailer combination.
Having the correct entitlement is only part of the picture. You must also ensure your towing vehicle is suitable, the trailer is correctly loaded and the combination remains within its permitted weight limits.
Even where a driver is legally entitled to tow, professional training can make a considerable difference to their ability and confidence.

Why Consider Professional Car and Trailer Training?
Towing a trailer changes how a vehicle behaves on the road.
The additional weight and length affect braking distances, acceleration, cornering and manoeuvrability. Reversing also requires a different technique, particularly when working in confined spaces.
For drivers who have never towed before, these differences can initially feel challenging.
At Sandy Arthur Training Services, our training focuses on developing practical skills that drivers can use every day, whether travelling with a caravan, transporting equipment or towing for business.
Our training can cover:
- Trailer coupling and uncoupling: Understanding the correct procedures and essential safety checks.
- Reversing and manoeuvring: Learning to control a trailer accurately and confidently.
- Vehicle and trailer safety: Checking tyres, lighting, braking systems and towing connections.
- Weights and loading: Understanding maximum authorised mass (MAM), towing capacities, noseweight and load security.
- On-road driving: Developing safer techniques for junctions, roundabouts, narrow roads and changing road conditions.
- Everyday towing situations: Building confidence when parking, turning and operating in restricted spaces.
The aim is not simply to complete a training session. It’s to leave with skills that make towing safer, easier and less stressful.
Automatic or Manual – Does It Matter Which Vehicle You Take Your Trailer Test In?
Yes, and this is something we believe drivers should understand before booking their car and trailer training.
In Northern Ireland, the type of vehicle used for your B+E driving test can affect the entitlement recorded on your driving licence.
If you pass your B+E test using an automatic car and receive restriction code 78 against Category B+E, your B+E entitlement is restricted to automatic vehicles.
This is an important distinction because the restriction applies to the B+E category on your licence.
If you pass your B+E test using a manual car, you can tow with both manual and automatic vehicles, provided you hold the appropriate driving licence entitlement.
For drivers who may need to tow with different vehicles in the future, particularly those working in construction, agriculture, landscaping or other commercial industries, completing the test in a manual vehicle can offer greater flexibility.
It’s worth thinking beyond the vehicle you currently drive. You might own an automatic car today but find yourself needing to tow with a manual vehicle for work or personal use in the future.
At Sandy Arthur Training Services, we encourage drivers to consider their long-term towing requirements before choosing their training and test vehicle.
Note: Code 78 denotes an automatic transmission restriction. Drivers with an existing unrestricted manual Category B entitlement should confirm with DVA how that entitlement interacts with any B+E restriction before relying on this advice.

Car and Trailer Training for Businesses
Trailer towing isn’t just for caravans and leisure activities.
Across Northern Ireland, trailers are used daily by construction companies, landscapers, agricultural businesses, maintenance contractors and other commercial operators.
Whether it’s transporting a mini digger, moving landscaping equipment or towing a plant trailer between sites, employees must understand how to operate their vehicle and trailer combination safely.
Poor loading, incorrect coupling, insufficient safety checks or a lack of reversing experience can create serious risks for drivers, colleagues and other road users.
Professional training provides an opportunity to improve driver competence, reinforce safe working practices and help employers demonstrate that they have taken appropriate steps to manage towing-related risks.
For businesses operating multiple vehicles or employing several drivers, we can also discuss training arrangements tailored to operational requirements.
Towing a Caravan or Leisure Trailer?
For many drivers, their first experience of towing comes when purchasing a caravan, horse trailer, boat trailer or trailer for a hobby.
Although the thought of heading away on holiday with a caravan can be exciting, reversing onto a pitch, negotiating narrow entrances or joining busy roads can be daunting without previous experience.
A practical training session before your first journey can make an enormous difference.
Understanding how your vehicle behaves with a trailer attached, how to position yourself correctly on the road and how to reverse without unnecessary stress can help make the whole experience much more enjoyable
It’s far better to practise these skills with an experienced instructor than to learn them for the first time on a busy campsite or narrow country road.
Experience and Professional Instruction Matter
At Sandy Arthur Training Services, driver training is at the heart of what we do.
With decades of experience across driver training, commercial transport and road safety, we understand that every driver arrives with a different level of experience and confidence.
Some may have never attached a trailer before, while others may have years of practical towing experience but want to improve their technique or prepare for an assessment.
Our approach is straightforward: practical instruction, clear explanations and training focused on real-world situations. We want drivers to understand not only how to perform a manoeuvre, but why the correct technique matters.
